Advantages of Having a Roommate (My Experience)

From Erasmus in Germany to shared living, what I learned from living with roommates.

Living with a roommate is something many students experience, especially when studying abroad. But if you’ve never done it before, it can feel uncomfortable or even intimidating. I had my first roommate experience in 2019, when I moved to Germany through the Erasmus exchange program. At first, I felt overwhelmed by the idea of living with complete strangers. German, Hungarian, Indian, Chinese, English, Czech, these were just some of the nationalities I lived with over two years.

Very quickly, I realized that living with roommates is not only financially smart, but also a valuable life experience.

In this article, I’ll share the advantages, challenges, and lessons I learned.

Affordable Living: The Biggest Advantage

Finding a good apartment at a reasonable price is difficult, whether in Germany or Georgia. In countries like Germany, shared living (WG – Wohngemeinschaft) is very common.
Universities often provide dormitories, but many students also live in shared private apartments.

Living with roommates allows you to split rent, utility bills and internet. This is one of the most effective ways to save money as a student.

Sharing Responsibilities

Living in a shared apartment also means sharing responsibilities. Common areas like kitchen and bathroom, require cooperation and organization.
One of the most common issues is cleanliness. That’s why it’s important to divide responsibilities and create a cleaning schedule.

When Problems Arise: My Experience

Of course, not everything was perfect. We had disagreements especially about cleaning and noisy guests.
For example, I often had issues with kitchen cleanliness. I would leave notes like: “Please clean the stove and sink after cooking” or “Please take out the trash on time”.
When I realized this wasn’t working, I gathered everyone one evening and we created a cleaning schedule together. Having clear, agreed rules helped us solve problems calmly.
This experience taught me communication, diplomacy and how to resolve conflicts effectively.

Tips for Choosing the Right Roommate

Pay attention to their personality
Ask about their daily routine (early sleeper or night owl?)
Agree on responsibilities in advance
Decide how to handle food and shared expenses
For example, in one apartment, everyone had their own space in the kitchen and fridge, which avoided conflicts.
